To him pipeline protectors was a revelation

To the Editor,

I am writing in regards to the Dakota Access Pipeline in Fort Yates. All my life, I have fought for all the wrong reasons which is why I am presently incarcerated. Throughout the ordeal in Standing Rock many of us have also been following closely as it has unfolded.

Soon to be released, I know that the battle has only just begun. Although everyone will soon disperse, to see so many different people come together for something good has inspired me. To quote Dr. Martin Luther king, Jr., “If you cannot find something good worth dying for then maybe your life isn’t worth living.”

I am Northern Cheyenne, Oglala Lakota Sioux, and Mexican. Another favorite quote of mine is by Emiliano Zapata: “I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees.” I am also a Christian, in Exodus 15:3 it says: “God is a man of war, the Lord is his name.”

Yesterday, like an open hand many of us have stood apart. Today calls for unity. At the start of closing our raised hand, the pinky says, “We come together, the ring finger says, “We stand together” the middle finger says, “We fight together” our index finger says, “For something good” and when we fold our thumbs in to form a fist, it shouts . . . “ALL NATIONS”!!

In closing, in 1st Peter 3:17 it says: “for it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.”
