Photo by James Giago Davies STURGIS — Perfect running conditions made for a record breaking regional meet at Woodle Field in Sturgis last Friday, as Belle Fourche junior Shayla Howell broke the meet record for both the 400 meters and the Girls Long Jump. Sturgis captured both team titles, winning the Girls competition with 174 points to 117 points for second place Custer, and winning the Boys with 159 point to 140 points for second place St Thomas More.

Howell was pressed hard into the final turn of the 400 meters by Haleigh Timmer of St Thomas Moore and Kylee Bennett of Sturgis. But Howell came out of the turn explosively pulling several strides ahead of Timmer and setting a meet record and personal best of 57.06. Haleigh was second in 57.71 and Bennett took third in 59.83.
