By Native Sun News Today Staff

AVIS LITTLE EAGLE AVIS LITTLE EAGLE HURON – Avis Little Eagle, the publisher of the Teton Times based in McLaughlin, has been nominated for the Spirit of Dakota Award.

She is among 11 nominees also chosen to compete for the award. The award will be presented at the Spirit of Dakota Award’s 31st Anniversary Award ceremony to be held on October 7, 2017 at the Crossroads Hotel and Huron Event Center.

Each nominee will be recognized and honored at the 6:30 p.m. Award Banquet.

Little Eagle was nominated by Tim Giago, an Oglala Lakota newspaper publisher and current owner of the Native Sun News Today newspaper based in Rapid City. Giago said, “Avis worked for me as a reporter with the old Lakota Times and after she won the contest to rename the paper to Indian Country Today she continued on as one of my best journalists and I eventually moved her to the Managing Editor’s position. She was fearless in her reporting and broke many stories that put our newspaper on the map.”

“She is still in the newspaper business and is doing a great job of providing a forum for the people of the Standing Rock Reservation that straddles North and South Dakota,” Giago said.

“Our Lakota women never seem to get the attention or recognition they deserve and I am glad that I had the opportunity to make this nomination,” he said.
