Susan Alice American Horse

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Susan Alice American Horse, 67, made her journey to the Spirit World on Monday, October 23, 2017 in Grand Forks, N.D.

Susan Alice American Horse was born on June 11, 1950 to Albert American Horse Sr. and Mary Elizabeth (Ribsman) American Horse. Susan was born and raised in Calico. She attended all her school years at Holy Rosary Mission and received her high school diploma on May 21, 1971. Susan immediately began her higher education at Chadron State College in Nebraska and later received her Business Accounting Certification from the National Indian Training Center in Brigham, Utah in 1979.

Susan had an honorably extensive employment history. Her career started with the Oglala Sioux Tribe Financial Accounting Office from 1974 to 1994 holding positions of Revenue/Tax/Receipts Clerk/ Bookkeeper to Accounts Payable Clerk and Assistant Accountant. Then from 1995 to 2011, Susan embarked on short term adventures with the OST Public Safety Department (Receptionist/Assistant Cook), Loneman School (Personnel Clerk), OST Veteran’s Department (Receptionist/Secretary) OST Employee Assistance Program (Secretary/ Administrative Assistant), OST Wakpamni District Administration (Data Clerk), OST Personnel Office (Receptionist), OST District Coordinators Office (Secretary) and OST Child Care (Child Care Provider).

Susan retired her lifelong career in 2012 and became a homemaker and surrounded herself with her grandchildren. She enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and loved attending their basketball games and volleyball games. Susan loved her Lifetime movies and was an avid KILI listener and kept up daily with the Rapid City Journal. Susan was a beautiful, caring person and will be remembered by her solid work ethic and being a strong independent woman. She will be greatly missed by all whose heart she touched.

Susan is survived by her daughters, Germaine and Romaine Tobacco, both of Pine Ridge, and Frenchee (Casey Romero Sr.) Tobacco of Calico; sons, Monte Goings of Ft. Totten, N.D. and Vincent Tobacco III; grandchildren, Nathaniel Ten Fingers, Manuel Jr., Daniel Tobacco, Darrell III, Anissa, Rodney, Andre, Ciara Martin, Tomaz Goings, Rhionna and RayVaughn Brewer, Juliana Hussman, Mariah, Casey Jr., Misty Romero, and Addisone and Aiden Goings; brothers, Albert American Horse Jr. of New York, Denver American Horse of Calico, Gerald American Horse of Porcupine and Dale American Horse Sr. of Towaoc, Colo.

Susan is preceded in death by her parents, Albert Sr. and Mary American Horse; sisters, Velvedene Linda Tobacco and Jeanette American Horse; eldest son, Manuel Tobacco; and grandson, Dennis Tobacco.

A one day service started on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at the Calico Advent Church in the Calico Community near Pine Ridge. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at the Calico Advent Church in Calico Community near Pine Ridge, with Fr. Ed Hunt, S.J. officiating. Burial service was at the Advent Chapel Episcopal Cemetery in Pine Ridge.
