Barbara Iron Wing

EAGLE BUTTE – Barbara Iron Wing, 75, made her journey to the Spirit World Sunday, April 23, 2017, at IHS Hospital in Eagle Butte.

Barbara (Counting) Iron Wing was born to Simon Counting and Sophie Garter at the Old Agency. Barbara was the oldest of six siblings. She grew up in the Bear Creek community and then later moved south of Eagle Butte. Barbara attended school at the Old Agency Boarding School. She married George R. Iron Wing Sr., and to this union four children were born: Mark (deceased), Sharana, George, and Chauncina. They made their home in the LaPlant community; as her husband had a ranch north of there. Barbara enjoyed working on the ranch, helping her husband brand, fencing, and feeding the cattle and horses. She often took her four children along when she was helping George. She loved and cherished all her memories of times spent with her husband and children.

Barbara enjoyed quilting; sewing for her brother, Kenneth; and baking and cooking for her family. Barbara attended church every Sunday at the LaPlant First Baptist Church. She looked forward to “Simply Smile” and enjoyed their company when they came each summer. She also enjoyed attending the sporting events of her granddaughter, Kobey, at Tiospaye Topa School. Every summer she would attend the women’s retreat with Sally Jezek and Joan Garter. She used to sit at the council sessions, and she would attend the District 6 meetings regularly. Barbara was a very soft spoken and kind lady who had compassion for others. She lived a very humble life and often reflected back on her childhood and growing up years. She thought highly of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved traveling with her oldest daughter, Sharana, to the southwest or wherever she was going. She would jump in just to go for a drive out of town. This month, she was looking forward to making one last trip to Arizona for her two granddaughter’s, Brittany and Nizhoni’s, high school graduation, but her time with us ended too soon.

Barbara is survived by her children: Sharana Iron Wing (Brady), George Iron Wing (Sierra), and Chauncina Iron Wing all of Eagle Butte; sister, Phyllis Begay of Window Rock, Ariz.; brother, Darrell (Joan) Garter of New Hope, Ala.; and hunka sister, Carrie Blue Coat.

She was in preceded in death by her parents, Simon Counting and Sophie Garter; husband, George Iron Wing Sr.; son, Mark Iron Wing; grandson, Isiah Desmond Iron Wing; brother, Kenneth Counting Sr.; sisters, Dora Phillips and Gloria Brown; and sister-in-law, Chauncina Bourdufsky.

Funeral services were held May 5 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Eagle Butte with Mikayla Dunfee presiding. Burial followed at the Congregational Cemetery in La- Plant. A wake service was held May 4 at the church.

Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with arrangements. (www.familyfuneralhome.net)
