WOUNDED KNEE — Carl Curtis Janis Sr. “Hoksila Pehin Jiji” (The Boy with Yellow Hair), 27, journeyed to the Spirit World on Friday, October
20, 2017 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Carl Curtis Janis Sr. was born on April 5, 1990 in Lacrosse, Wis. to Andre Janis Sr. and Carletta Jumping Eagle.
Carl is survived by his father, Andre Janis Sr. (stepmother: Martha Protector) of Wounded Knee; mother, Carletta Jumping Eagle (stepfather, Antoine Gay) of Manderson; son, Carl Curtis Janis Jr. of Pine Ridge; brothers, Christian Janis, Maurice Jumping Eagle and Wambli Jumping Eagle, all of Manderson; sisters, Andrea Jumping Eagle of Rapid City, Brynda Janis of Prescott, Wis., Carteecia Jumping Eagle of Manderson, Jackie Randall of Rapid City, Tamara Randall, Kimberly and Ashlee Randall, all of Pine Ridge; grandmother, Brynda (Calvin Spotted Bear) Jumping Eagle of Manderson; great-grandmother, Mildred Thunder Bull of Kyle; aunts, Elena Kindness of Crow Agency, Mont., Pamela Janis of Rapid City, Sheila Janis, of Minneapolis and Alicia Jumping Eagle of Scottsbluff, Neb.; uncles, Rico Iron Bear of Manderson and Sylvan Jumping Eagle of Sioux Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Carl was preceded in death by his sister, Angel Jumping Eagle; brother, Andre Janis Jr.; aunt, Tara Iron Bear; and grandparents, Jean Janis, Curt Janis, and Sylvan Iron Bear.
A two night wake service started on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at the St. Agnes Catholic Church Hall in Manderson, and the second night at the Little Wound School Small Gym in Kyle. Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the Little Wound School Small Gym, with Fr. Joe. Daoust, S.J. officiating. Traditional Lakota services were with Mr. Mike Cross. Burial services were at the St. Stephen’s Catholic Cemetery in Kyle.
