CHAMBERLAIN –– There will be tons of fun where the Missouri River meets Interstate 90 in Chamberlain the third weekend in August. American Island Days is back again for its fourth year in Chamberlain, with events planned for the whole family, Aug. 19-21.
Festivities begin on Friday with a Little Miss & Miss American Island pageant. Girls in kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade will compete for the titles at the Oacoma Community Center (100 E 3rd St., Oacoma) at 7 p.m., Aug. 19. The local Relay for Life group will host a beach party at American Creek, featuring a hog roast, sand volleyball and more from 6-9 p.m. At sunset, there will be a Movie on The River. People can head to American Creek Marina to watch the movie Jaws. No coolers are allowed.
On Saturday, activities really take off. A 5K Color Run will begin at 8 a.m. (at Busted Nut parking lot), followed by bouncy inflatables, the Mighty Mo Car Show, a caricature artist, frog jumping contest and more. New this year is Ag Olympics. Children and adults will compete, undertaking challenges with their partners that are sure to invoke laughter from spectators and participants alike.
While kids work up an appetite playing, there will be 20-plus vendors for adult shopping until it’s time for lunch. Several savory and sweet food vendors will be set up to curb those cravings.
At 5:30 p.m., the popular Bed Races take place outside the Silver Dollar Bar (206 N. Main St.). Teams of all ages will showcase their makeshift beds on wheels and race to see who can push their bed down Main Street, turn around, and race back the fastest – and without their bed falling apart. This is a crowd favorite and appropriate for all ages.
The Sidehackers from Pierre and Ft. Pierre will take the stage at 8 p.m. through midnight. The rock band plays covers of popular songs such as Roger Clyne’s “Tell Your Momma.”
Also in the evening, there will be one final event for kids with a movie under the stars at the American Creek pier at 9 p.m.
On Sunday, activities come to a close with a church service at 9:30 a.m. at American Creek. In the event of rain, the service will be moved to United Church of Christ.
“American Island Days is perfect for all family members and is simply just a lot of fun. Chamberlain is a prime location and easily accessible from I-90 for travelers coming from either direction. This is our biggest year yet and it’s sure to be a lot of fun,” said Donna Buche, one of the event’s organizers.
