Denise Esther Richards was born on May 19, 1965 in Pine Ridge, SD to John B. Richards and Bernice Swallow.  Denise made her journey to the Spirit World on August 28, 2021 in Pine Ridge, SD.

Denise’s siblings are Joe Bat Richard, Ione Reddy, Linda (Floyd Butler) Richard, Debra (Alex) White Plume, Michelle (Steve) Tyon, Tami Stone, and Glenn Richard.

Denise was preceded in death by her parents, John B. Richards and Bernice Swallow; sisters, Ione Reddy and Debra White Plume; nephews, John B. and Francis W. Richard, and Victorio Camp, Jr.

Denise was a very intelligent young woman who had many friends, she helped many people.  She had a beautiful smile and a heart of gold.  Denis had a special friend, Butch Running Hawk, whom she loved dearly.  Butch tried to save her when she fell and passed away outside of her house.  Denise was in a terrible auto accident when she was 19 years old and was in a coma  for 3 weeks.  She had right sided weakness after she came out of the coma.  Denise was never able to work or go to school due to memory problems from the accident and also was not able to have children either.  Denise’s nieces and nephews were her children and loved them dearly.  She always had dogs and she loved them and they protected her.  Denise lived with our mom until she passed and continued to live independently with Butch Running Hawk, her special friend.

Pallbearers will be Shawn Hill, Dean Thunder Hawk, Mashon Camp, Charles Camp, Dallas White Plume, Joe Romandia, Johnny Joe White Plume, Lance Martin, Sr. and Glenn Richard.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jenny Kills Back, Wahukiza Luta Sundancers, American Indian Movement, and All Family & Friends.

Wake Services:  One night wake service starting at 3:00 PM, Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at the Joyner Hall in Pine Ridge, SD.

Funeral Services:  12:00 PM, Thursday, September 2, 2021 at the Joyner Hall in Pine Ridge, SD.

Traditional Lakota Services:  Mr. Vic Camp

Burial Services:  Reshaw Family Cemetery, Porcupine, SD
