Idle hands are the devil’s workshop

The End Zone

Training camp officially begins on July 26th, and both veterans and rookies will attend. Preseason games begin the week after that, so teams will be scouting for back-up talent. During this time, there are still two teams who are under the 50% vaccinated threshold.  Cowboys Hall of Famer WR Michael Irving was visibly upset that the Cowboys have not met their 85% vaccinated goal. At a Dallas Chapter of Emerging Veterans and former players meeting Irving stated, “Yeah, it should upset them. Dude, you are not thinking right. You are not thinking right. Nothing else can be important. You are not going to get this easily [winning a Super Bowl]. Currently, Washington Football Team and the Indianapolis Colts are among the lowest vaccinated teams while Pittsburgh, Miami, Carolina and Denver remain the highest vaccinated.

In Washington, President Biden will host the Super Bowl Champions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for a traditional ceremony. A photo opportunity with the Commander-in-Chief is something players can really look forward to. Tougher-than-tough Buccaneers QB, Tom Brady, played the entire season last year with a torn MCL. Brady had surgery in the off-season which will make him even more effective this season.

Getting support from his quarterback is Raiders DE Carl Nassib. After Nassib’s recent announcement that he is gay, teammate QB Derek Carr rendered support stating, “If no one else has your back, I will.”

Former Falcons LB Barkevious Mingo had his contract terminated after his arrest in Texas. Mingo was charged with indecency engaging with someone under the age of seventeen. Thus, causing the child to engage in sexual contact. Mingo’s lawyer stated that the Falcons rushed to judgement.

Looking to find an answer to why there are so many hamstring injuries, the league is spending four million dollars to find out. With the University of Wisconsin’s research study, the number-one injuries players miss time for are lower leg injuries. “They could have just paid me the money,” joked the Captain. The End Zone has noted for years that players suffer these injuries due to dehydration and the lack of drinking pure water before games. Stretching before practice or game-time is crucial, especially in hot weather. Muscles have a tendency to shrink along with soft muscle tissue if not properly stretched or hydrated.

In New Orleans, Saints DT David Onyemata failed the leagues’ policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances. His suspension will last six weeks, with Onyemata returning in Week Seven on October 26th.

The NFL has lost one of its greatest offensive minds at the passing away of former Broncos Offensive Coordinator, Alex Gibbs, at 80 years of age. Gibbs guided to Broncos offensive line to back-to-back Super Bowl victories in 1997 and 1998. He was most noted for not allowing his offensive line to speak to the media.

Washington Football Team is looking to make another change to their name. A new logo and name, however, will not be linked to any Native American name(s) or imagery, according to Team President Jason Wright. A survey was sent out to season ticket holders and “Warriors” was the number one suggestion.

As we stated, “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop,” chided the Captain. San Francisco Forty-Niners’ All-Pro CB, Richard Sherman, was arrested for burglary charges. Sherman was reportedly drunk and, according to 911, he was threatening to kill himself. Security cameras outside of his in-laws home showed Sherman trying to force the door open to their Seattle residence. King County Prosecutor’s office has charged Sherman with five counts, including burglary and two domestic violence charges. Before the burglary incident, Sherman hit and damaged a construction barrier and was resisting arrest.  Many people who know Sherman personally stated that “he was not himself and that is not the Richard Sherman we know.” Sherman stated at his court appearance, “I am deeply remorseful for my actions, I have behaved in a manner that I am not proud of.”

Speaking of domestic violence, even football players can be a victim of domestic assault. Pittsburgh Steelers new arrival, QB Dwayne Haskins, was a victim of assault by his wife. She is now facing charges that stemmed from an alleged assault on Haskins, splitting his lip along with other mouth injuries. It was reported that Haskins lost a tooth in the incident but claims he has all of his teeth.
