James Corbett Chief ‘Tokea Mani’ (Walks First)

PINE RIDGE — James Corbett Chief “Tokea Mani” (Walks First), 49, journeyed to the Spirit World on Saturday, October 21, 2017at his home near Pine Ridge.

James Corbett Chief was born on November 15, 1967 in Rushville, Neb. to Roy Chief and Josephine (Spotted Bear) Chief.

James is survived by his wife, Patricia Chief of Pine Ridge; son, James “Baby Jim” Chief, Jr. of Kyle; daughters, Tashawni Chief and Cheryl Chief both of Pine Ridge; hunka sisters, Denise Evans and Gayla Spotted Bear both of Pine Ridge, and Brenda Mesteth of Wolf Creek; hunka brothers, Marei Kingi of Pine Ridge and Robert Deckert of Denby; brother-in-laws, Waylon and Derek LaMont both of Pine Ridge; sister-in-laws, Stephanie Raygoza, Jamie Rodriguez, Tiffany Walking Eagle, Latonna LaMont, and Destiny Janis all of Pine Ridge; cousin, Bonnie Holy Rock; and niece, Dawn Holguin both of Wolf Creek.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Josephine Chief; sister, Cherylanne Chief; grandparents, James & Myrtle Chief; aunt and uncle, Johnson and Amelia Holy Rock.

A one night wake service started on Friday, October 27, 2017 at the Wolf Creek School Gymnasium. Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the Wolf Creek School Gymnasium, with Mr. Marei Kingi officiating. Burial was at Chief Family Cemetery in Pine Ridge.
