John Sidney Howe Sr.




 

 

BIG BEND — John Sidney Howe Sr. (Chubby Prairie Chicken) “Siyocepa Hokshina Full Blood”, 74, of Big Bend, made his journey to the Spirit World on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at his home.

He was born on February 24, 1942 to Rose Sargeant Howe and Edward Howe Sr. in the Joe Creek area. John is the nephew of the late Oscar Howe and descendent of Chief Bone Necklace. John went to Immaculate Conception Boarding School in Stephan. He went to trade school in Fargo, N.D. and got a degree in auto body and mechanics. He worked in various body shops in California, South Dakota and North Dakota. He worked as an alcohol counselor at Swift Horse Lodge. He worked as a CHR in Big Bend and worked with the ambulance department in Fort Thompson. He enjoyed listening to country music and driving around in his truck, spending time with all of his grandsons and granddaughters. When he was in good health he would fix and paint cars. He liked fast cars! He also liked going to the Bad Moccasin Sundance in Fort Thompson.

He is survived by his children: Janice (Louis) Adrian, Candice Howe, Ethel (Dwight) Lefthand Bull, Clarice (Ken) Jewett, Marice Ashley, Leatrice (Londel) Seaboy, Raynard (Loralee) Howe Sr., Charles Howe Sr., Janice Bad Moccasin, Travis Firecloud, Guy St. John Jr. and Galen Drapeau Jr.; siblings: Edward Howe Jr., Fabian Howe Sr. (Marcella), Carl Howe Sr., Sharlene Howe, Mavin (Leroy) Chavez and Theresa Howe; many special grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cynthia Iron Road Howe; son John Howe Jr.; his parents Edward Howe Sr. and Rose Sargeant Howe; sister Haida Howe; and six great-grandchildren.

Wake services were held October 27, and Friday October 28, 2016. Rosary was held Thursday evening at St. Catherine’s Hall in Big Bend. Funeral service followed by traditional services were held on October 29, 2016 at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Big Bend, with Fr. Joseph Dean, SCJ, Fr. Christianus Hendrik, SCJ and Fr. Vincent Suparman, SCJ officiating. Danny Seaboy Sr. and Galen Drapeau Jr. lead the traditional service. Interment was at the Howe Family Plot in Big Bend.

Honorary casket bearers were Bob Hattum, Mabel Big Crow, Narisse Johnson Sr., Maurice Rencountre, Dick and Judy Hanson, George Thin Elk, Richard Fluery and all of his friends.

Casket bearers were Wesley Firecloud, Londel Ashley, Milo Bull Bear, Ed Howe, Charles Howe Jr., Manuel Jewett, Michael Howe, Raynard Howe Jr., Ignatius Young Bear, Allen Bull Bear Jr. and Londel Seaboy Jr.

Chilson Funeral Home, Winsted, Minn., assisted the family with arrangements.
