WOUNDED KNEE – Lavina “Wanbli Ohanko Win” Gay, 83, made her journey to the Spirit World on Friday, January 13, 2017, at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City.
Lavina Ethel Gay, Wanbli Ohanko Win,” was born on December 19, 1933 at home in Wounded Knee to Stephen and Dora (Shot To Pieces) Gay. Lavina is survived by her daughters, Ethel (Bear Killer) Swallow of Wounded Knee and Darleen Bear Killer of Sharps Corner; son, William White Feather of Sharps Corner; sister, Martha (Gay) American Horse of Gordon, Neb.; nieces, Martha American Horse- Rossman and Daisy Martinez, both of Wounded Knee and Annabelle Martinez of Pine Ridge; nephew, Leonard Martinez of Wounded Knee; 61 grandchildren; and 47 great grandchildren.
Lavina was preceded in death by her mother, Dora Shot To Pieces-Gay; father, Stephen Gay; daughter, Colleen Good Shield; and sisters, Christina Gay Martinez and Daisy Gay American Horse.
Two night wake services were held Jan. 19 and 20 at the Church of God in Wounded Knee. Funeral services were held Jan. 21 at the Church of God, with Pastor Stanley Hollow Horn and Pastor Loren Robinson officiating. Traditional Lakota services held by Mr. David Swallow. Burial services were held at the Johnson Memorial Presbyterian Cemetery in Wounded Knee.
