Marvin ‘Chappy’ Maskewit ‘Wi Hni Sa’




 

 

SISSETON –– Marvin “Chappy” Maskewit ‘Wi Hni Sa’, 60, passed away in his sleep on Thursday, October 27, 2016, at his home in Long Hollow.

“Chappy” was born June 11, 1956, at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City to Gladys White and Mitchell Maskewit. His Dakota name was “Wi Ni Sa,” One that likes to hunt. He grew up and went to school in Rapid City. After attending school, he went on the pow wow trail and had many kids along the way. He then settled down and resided in Sisseton He loved hunting and fishing all year round. He enjoyed any outdoor activity. He was a champion moccasin player. He worked at Sisseton-Wahpeton Housing Authority for 20-plus years. He loved spending time with friends and family, he was always telling stories and jokes to make people laugh. He had the biggest smile and the biggest hugs anyone could ever offer. Chappy was well known in the community for his kindness and crazy ways. He will be greatly missed by many.

He was survived by children and grandchildren: Rosie Maskewit (Tayler Royce Seaboy, Alayah Annika Seaboy), Mitchell Maskewit (Abrielle Autumn Grace Carlson- Maskewit), Kathryn Three Legs (Brayden Three Legs, Evan Three Legs, Gavin Three Legs), Dennis Hill (Tusweca Hill and Tucker Hill), Shannon White (Cyrus LaFromboise and Aspen LaFromboise), sisters Memory White and Vanessa White and brother W. Turk White and many other relatives and friends, and especially all of his coworkers at SWO Housing.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Wake services were on Saturday, October 29. A all night wake was on October 30, 2016 at the Sisseton Oyate Tribal Community Center. Funeral services were held on Monday, October 31, 2016 at Sisseton Oyate Tribal Community Center, Agency Village, with Clyde Kampeska and Gerald Heminger Jr.officiating.

Drum group was the Buffalo Lake Sundance Group. Pallbearers were Clint Sederberg, John Redday Jr., Ron Redday, Bob Beetem, Vernon “Pasha” Renville, Dusty LaFromboise, EJ Greybuffalo, Glen Wanna, Terry McKay and Mike Goette. Honorary Pallbearers were Les King, Jeremiah Johnson, Wayne Lufkins, Francis Country Jr., Richard “Ponce” Owen, Tracy “Rollie” Harwood, Coke Jones, Micheal “Rick” Blackthunder, Troy DuMarce Sr., Clayton Dwarf Jr. and Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Housing Authority. Interment was at the Long Hollow Presbyterian Cemetery, Sisseton.

The Cahill Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
