Mustangs pick up second football win; highlights from cross country and volleyball

The high school sports scene is now fully involved with most programs sitting at the halfway point for the regular football season, and some surprises are highlighting the games seen so far.

Red Cloud’s 2-0 start has been tempered by two losses, first to Custer on the road, and a road loss to Chamberlain on Friday by the score of 26-0, but the Crusaders didn’t go down without a fight. The team saw starting QB Marty Richards leave in the second quarter, but was able to come back, and a good bit of throwing to Kobey O’Rourke had him reach the end zone when the score was only 12-0, but on a flag thrown, the team faced off on a fourth and 15…and was unable to convert. At 2-2, the Crusaders will next take on Pine Ridge, a team now sitting at 0-4 after a punishing loss to Hot Springs, a 60-0 loss. The Thorpes will be looking for some momentum, and a good rivalry game should help a bit. Likewise, Red Cloud will be looking to start their second half of the season off strong, and will have a road contest after Pine Ridge, travelling to Martin on October 2nd.
Little Wound has picked up its second win at the hands of Crow Creek in a blowout fashion. After one quarter, the Mustangs were up 30-0, and the rout was on at Stephan. Little Wound will next head into its homecoming at Martin on September 25th while Bennett County is coming off their own losing streak dropping contests to Custer, Lead-Deadwood and Gordon-Rushville, so this should be an exciting contest for the Mustangs.
Another homecoming contest took place this weekend in Mission as the Todd County Falcons hosted St. Francis. The Falcons came out quickly with Ty Herman scoring a one yard TD play, would also see Chris Fast Horse hit pay dirt with 6:05 left in the first quarter, spotting the Falcons to a 13-0 lead. In the second quarter, Fast Horse would run one in from 23 yards out, but for the highlight, Desmond Arcoren would score three touchdowns in one quarter…including two on defense. For his first touchdown, Arcoren would scamper in from 14 yards out, and a two point conversion would be good, on a pass from Antone Iron Heart to Chris Eagle Bear. Following Fast Horse’s TD run, Arcoren would pick off the ensuing Crow Creek play, and take it back 27 yards for a score at the 4:16 mark. He would strike again, as Crow Creek worked their way downfield, late in the second quarter, this time as time was expiring, taking an interception back 85 yards, setting the team up with a 41-0 lead. The final score, at the 8:05 mark for Todd County, would come from a 3 yard run by Herman, and a kick from Austin Hammer would make it 48-0.
Tiospa Zina picked up a win over McLaughlin, 53-0 giving the home team a 2-1 record, after a season-opening win over Lower Brule on September 4. McLaughlin, 0-4 on the season next plays at Bison on September 25 while Tiospa Zina next hosts Ipswich/Edmunds Central.
Marty Indian played Tripp-Delmont/Armour, dropping a contest 18-44, but it was good to see these athletes play their first contest of the season. The team had forfeited their previous two contests, to Corsica-Stickney and Colome. Their next contest will be against Burke/South Central, in Bonesteel.
Jones County/White River took on Wagner Friday, and in White River, dropped a close contest to a tough Wagner squad, 12-0. The team, now 1-2, will next play Mobridge-Pollock at Murdo, as the team alternates home sites. The team wills next play at White River on October 9, against Todd County.

Cross Country
The Custer Invite took place on Thursday involving athletes from Red Cloud, Takini, Little Wound and Pine Ridge schools. The top girl to run, Calbi Ausmann came from Newcastle High School, while Miracle Spotted Bear would finish in 41st, out of Pine Ridge, Lamia Vasquez from Little Wound in 58, and Cathlyn Knutson from Red Cloud would finish in 65th place. Also finishing would be Jordan Carlow from Pine Ridge at 68, Shyla Cottier from Pine Ridge (75th), Fallon Sorbel from Pine Ridge (77) and Paula Yellowboy from Little Wound (86th).

Red Cloud’s Jeremiah Whalen would finish in 37th, Little Wounds’ Angel Old Horse and Darrell Looks Twice would finish in 40th and 42nd, and Riley Mesteth would finish at 61. For team points Red Cloud would finish fifth overall, Little Wound in 9th overall.

Volleyball
In Volleyball, now about 10 games into the regular season by this stage the Lady Thorpes would be running away from the pack in the Region 7. However, due to players graduating, the team started out their season with a 6-3 record, currently in second place in the Region 7. The team started the year out going 3-2 in Custer, dropping contests to Custer and Lead-Deadwood, and then in three contests at home, the team captured wins against Todd County and Little Wound, but lost a heartbreaker to Hot Springs on September 17th in five sets.
Red Cloud, as mentioned started out the season strong, going 7-3, and at the Custer Invitational won their first three contests, before losses to Custer and Lead-Deadwood saw their record finish at 3-2. Since the tournament, the team has gone 4-1 though, a four set loss to Douglas the only blemish to note. The team paid back the loss in Custer to Custer, by taking a five set victory over the Lady Wildcats on September 3rd, and has won their last three straight, with wins over Little Wound, St. Francis in four, and at Sturgis, in three straight. Their next two contests, at home feature St. Thomas More, and Hot Springs, before a road game at Oelrichs, and the LNI games in October.
Little Wound’s Lady Mustangs, meanwhile have started strong, going 5-3 after a season-opening five set road win at Kadoka. The team has then alternated wins and losses, picking up wins against Oelrichs, Kadoka at Kyle, Crow Creek and Todd County, while dropping contests to Custer, Red Cloud and Pine Ridge in four sets. The team next plays Takini on September 21 and at Oelrichs on September 22, before a home contest against St. Francis, then on to the LNI tournament on October 2.
Cheyenne-Eagle Buttes’ Lady Braves are starting out with a 6-3 record, after starting the season 3-0; the team took in a tournament at Mobridge, going 3-2, and a loss against Miller, in Ft-Pierre. The team next has three home games, against Crow Creek, Takini and Pine Ridge, before a road game at Mobridge, and the team goes to the LNI tournament as well.
