Our condolences to the Takes War Bonnet family for their loss

Little Notes Wowapi Cikala

An old friend of our retired publisher, Herb Wounded Head, had a great sense of humor. It was hard to tell if he was joking or being serious at times. But he told us one time about a trip he took to Paris on OST business.

He said, “I went to the hotel outdoor restaurant for breakfast. A waiter in a tuxedo came to the table and said, Bon Appetite, and I assumed he was asking my name so I said, Herb Wounded Head. The next day I was having breakfast again and the same waiter approached my table. I thought I would beat him to the punch and ask his name. I said Bon Appetite and the waiter replied, Herb Wounded Head.”

Another semi-true story: Leo Vocu and Cleveland Neiss worked for NCAI in Washington years back and shared an apartment. One day Cleve said, “I sure could use a hot bowl of taniga.” And so they bought some tripe and started cooking. There was a knock on the door and when Cleve answered it there stood their landlord. The landlord said, “Gee, I’m sorry boys; I didn’t know your sewer had backed up.”

A group of Rosebud boys ran into some Oglala boys at the Todd Country line. The Rosebudders started to throw fire crackers at the Pineridgers. The Oglala boys lit them and threw them back at them.

Kim Greager has been working with Laura Tonkyn in layout in design to get a feel for the new program. Laura is thinking about retiring in the spring. She has been as reliable as reliable can be and we do not want to see her go.

In between hosting the Oyate Today Show every Saturday night, Richie Richards has been busy cranking out stories for Native Sun News Today. We ran across a couple of column written by Alvin Fast Wolf for the old Lakota Times under the title of “The Wandering Wolf.” Alvin, now deceased, used to travel all over Western South Dakota as our sales representative and he always had stories to tell about all of the people he met while on his route. He was asked to just start writing about his travels and so that is when “The Wandering Wolf” started. Our readers back then loved it.

We saw on Facebook that the Oglala Sioux Tribe was about to start its own newspaper. Now how many times have we seen that over the past 40 years? We thought they had an “Official Newspaper of the Oglala Sioux Tribe” already. What happened to that? No, it wasn’t us. We have never claimed to be the legal paper for any tribe.

Do you think that if anyone wrote a letter to the editor of the new tribal newspaper with a complaint against the tribe that they would print it? Don’t hold your breath on that one. That is why we have a newspaper free and independent of the OST.

We are mourning along with Leon and Amanda Takes War Bonnet over the loss of their son Leon, Jr. Leon Sr. and Amanda were longtime employees of the Lakota Times and Indian Country Today. Some of the old timers first met Leon Jr. when he was just seven years old back in the early 1980s.

Leon ran the printing presses and Amanda was one of the great Lakota women editors for the Lakota Times and Indian Country Today. We will be having our annual Christmas Party on Dec. 8. Doksa Ake’.
