September 16, 1985 ~ June 25, 2022
Rekal was born on September 16, 1985 in Pine Ridge, SD to Marian Poor Bear and Pete Plenty Wounds, Jr. Rekal is the only son of this union and lived most of his life in Oglala, SD. Rekal made his journey to the Spirit World on June 25, 2022 at the UC Health Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, CO.
Rekal’s Lakota name was given to him by his Grandfather, Pete Plenty Wounds, Sr. at Wakpamni Lake celebration, and Harold Dean Salway tied his eagle feather. Rekal attended and graduated from Loneman School and then graduated from Red Cloud High School in 2003. Rekal attended Oglala Lakota College and received a one-year certificate in carpentry. Then, Rekal joined the work force in order to provide for his family. Growing up Rekal was surrounded by his loving female cousins and sisters, as he was the only boy relative for many years. As a young boy, Rekal had the most comical, intelligent rhetoric, because he knew about everything, expressed himself well, and those he was talking to often wondered where he learned his information because he was so smart and quiet. Rekal loved music. Rekal loved loud music. He travelled long distances to music concerts to watch his favorite artists perform and sing. Rekal had a kind and quiet demeanor as a man and father. He loved his children Kraygen, Rakeem, Raniah, and George, and wanted the best for them. In his final days, Rekal worked for the Oglala Sioux Tribe and made many friends and acquaintances.
