Robert “Bobby” Coats

KYLE—Robert “Bobby” Coats, 77, made his journey to the Spirit World on Jan. 9, 2016 at the home of family in Dell Rapids, S.D.

Bobby was born on October 27, 1939 in Shannon County, Edna Bernice (Audiss) and Robert L. Coats. Bobby spent most of his school years growing up in Kyle, and attending Holy Rosary Mission. He began an early work life at age 14, diligently saving and borrowing money to purchase calves to get a foot in ranching. Ranching was at the heart of Bobby’s life and he had both love and admiration for the land, cows and above all, horses. He continued to work in other areas such as the sand hills, for his uncle, Junior, in Mission Town drilling wells, and in construction in Chamberlain in order to build a secure ranching business over the years. At age 22 Bobby suffered a tragic accident while working at Big Bend Dam which left him near death. Bobby pushed through the obstacles of paralysis from head, neck and back trauma only to once again re-establish roots in the ranching business. Bobby actively took part in all aspects of his ranching business through the years and continued in the masterful art of running a successful ranch operation until the time of his death. Bobby was a lifetime fan of football/Broncos and hosted an annual super bowl/poker party for friends and family for 15 years! He was also a rodeo and bull-riding watcher and had great enjoyment in listening to country music. Bobby pursued a quiet and disciplined life based on his respect for “Momma and Jesus and Jones” and was an unconditional and non-judgmental friend to many. Bobby was diagnosed with cancer in Dec. 2015 and continued to display his lifelong fighting spirit throughout the few short weeks following.

Bobby was loved and revered by many who knew him well and left many loyal friends behind. He will be deeply missed by his daughter, Kimberly (Don) Baum of Dell Rapids,  eight loving siblings Larry Coats, Donna Michael (Robert), Dick Coats, Roland Coats (Ginny), Calvin Coats, Renee’ Coats, Pattie Nelson (Rex), Bonnie Musfelt and Marvin Coats (Janet), one grandchild, Calen Kusler (Ashley), and three great-grandchildren, Cayden, Carsen and Kaylie.

Waiting at the doors of Heaven are his parents, Robert and Bernice Coats, grandparents Clyde and Jenny Coats, and sister Carolyn Booth and many, many loyal friends.
