August 27, 1973 ~ September 6, 2022
BEAR CREEK – Stuart Turning Heart, 48, of Bear Creek, SD, made his journey to the Spirit World on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at Avantera Mountain View, Rapid City.
Stuart Duane Turning Heart was born August 27, 1973, at Eagle Butte, SD to Lucy (Turning Heart) One Feather and Marion (Sash) Eagle Chasing II.
At eight months of age Stuart was taken in by his Great Lala and Unci Dennis and Rosalie Counting Dog Eagle, he was raised as one of their own, and he was blessed with a good life. When Stuart was little, he loved the show “Dukes of Hazzard”. When the song would come on, he would play guitar and sing, so Lala Dennis called him his “Little Cowboy”. Stuart’s favorite song was the “Good Ole’ Boys”. Unci Rosalie gave Stuart Lala Dennis’ Lakota name, “Wi Yuha Naji”-Stands with the Sun. Unci Rosalie said, “Stuart would be the last one to carry this name.” They provided him with a very beautiful way of life, and he was their Pride and Joy. Stuart’s life was changed, and he suffered a broken heart when Lala and Unci left him for the Wicahpi Nation. After their passing his Grandma Gladys Turning Heart (mom) took him as one of her own. He stayed with her until he wanted to venture out and live with his mom Lucy and Ben One Feather in Little Eagle, SD. Stuart enjoyed life, he made lots of friends, hunka’d many families, and was a very kind, gentle soul. He loved to tease and visit, and he loved children. He had many nicknames, but he is mostly known as “Koda” or “Station Creation”.
Stuart became a dad to his oldest son who he loves dearly, Dennis Turning Heart, and his baby girl, Cary Turning Heart, who had her daddy’s heart. He brought her to meet Unci Gladys and all the family. His other children included handsome son Stuart Turning Heart Jr., So-Ta Turning Heart, and his youngest baby girl Shoni Turning Heart was the princess. He also raised two stepdaughters which he loved as his own, Phatima Carion and Neveah Weasel and baby girl Aurora Weasel.
A real Mahto Wakpa warrior, he was diagnosed with a permanent illness that the doctor said would give him a life expectancy of 90 days, but Stuart didn’t accept that termination letter, he proved everyone wrong. The last year of his life tunwin Arlys Turning Heart Bagola took care of him as her own, spent tireless hours day in and day out tending to him, and never gave up on him.
