Well, it is mid-July and NFL fans are being more anxious as preseason approaches in a few weeks. In Las Vegas, history was made as Sandra Douglass Morgan became the first black woman to become General Manager of an NFL franchise. Morgan, who was born in Las Vegas, is the former Chairwoman and Executive Director of the Nevada Gaming Control. Historically, the Raiders have given opportunities to minorities that other organizations with the hiring of the first black head coach, Art Shell.
Congratulations to former Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Mike Holmgrem and Broncos Coach Mike Shannahan. Both Holmgrem and Shannahan have been selected as semi-finalist for the 2023 Hall of Fame. Ironically, these two coaches met in Super Bowl 32. Both coaches have led their teams to numerous post season appearances. Also, a semi-finalist for 2023 Hall of Fame is Amy Trask CEO of the Las Vegas Raiders. Trask was noted for giving key information in the past to Raiders Owner Al Davis.
Washington Commanders Owner Dan Synder has agreed to testify via satellite to the House Oversight Committee. Synder was scheduled for the hearing on July 6 or 8. Synder’s Attorney Karen Patton Seymore, wants to be scheduled for July 28, or 29.
More trouble in Bears country as WR Dave Moore was arrested in his hometown of Gainesville, Texas. Moore was released on a $5,000 bond after being arrested for public intoxication as he fell asleep in a Taco Bell parking lot. Upon arrival of police, they noticed a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. Upon closer inspection, they noticed gummy edible candies along with three unregistered pistols. Moore was arrested for possession of a Controlled Substance PG2 and unlawful carrying of a weapon. “This marks the third arrest of a Bears player this offseason,” noted the Captain.
Home is where the heart is as LB Justin Houston returns to the Baltimore Ravens on a one-year deal. Houston has been selected to four Pro Bowls in his career. Speaking of finding a home, former Browns QB Baker Mayfield has landed one with the Carolina Panthers. In return, the Browns will receive a 2024 conditional draft pick in return. “I feel that is a good acquisition for the Panthers,” stated the Captain. That organization has needed a good quarterback since the departure of Cam Newton.
Boston University researchers have discovered the cause of death for former Broncos and Giants All-Pro WR Demaryius Thomas. Thomas’ brain was studied to reveal that he had a degenerative brain disease known as CTE. CTE,in this case, was due to repeated blows to the head. A conclusion that was formed by the Concussion Legacy Foundation which led the research. Initially, Marshall’s family thought his death was caused by seizures that he suffered from a car accident at the time. However, through research, it was discovered that his death was linked to CTE. Marshall was found dead in his home in Rosell, Georgia this past December.
