The new Family Fare Shopping Centers are well worth the stop

The new name of the shopping centers once known as Family Thrift is now Family Fare. The two remaining stores, one at Baken Park and the other on St. Patrick Street, have been expanded and completely remodeled. The stores on W. Chicago and Omaha Streets have been closed.

Nash Finch, the owner of the markets, bought the old Albertson’s Grocery Story on Omaha Street several years so and turned it into a Family Thrift Store.

So how has all of the name changes and reconstruction worked out?

Grouchy decided to check it all out. The old Family Thrift Shopping Centers always had great delicatessens where one could get sandwiches, coffee and entire meals. Well the new stores have much larger deli’s and one can get fried chicken, soup, mashed potatoes and gravy, and a variety of salads. There are still tables available for you if you want to pick out a deli meal and dine inside of the Shopping Center.

Grouchy and guest stopped by the Baken Park store and got some baked chicken and potato salad for less than $10. They found the chicken to be quite good. The potato salad was also quite good. So if you are shopping at the store and just want to have a snack there are a variety of deli foods to choose from and to top everything off there is a great bakery in the store where everything is freshly baked.

The expanded stores are a treasure trove for discerning shoppers. It is almost like shopping in one of the super stores one finds in foreign countries. There is such a variety of food items that you just do not see in any other of our local markets. Grouchy remembers shopping at a market in London and recalls the amazement of finding fruits and vegetables from all around the world.

The veggie section of the new Family Fare’s is that way. It has so many different vegetables and fruits to choose from like fresh coconuts and pineapples. Grouchy had to ask the names of some of the strange looking fruits and vegetables, but it was pretty exciting to walk around the store and see such a variety of everything. And don’t forget, if you are a veteran you get a 10 percent discount on your groceries.

Grouchy did buy a carton of coconut ice cream just to see what it tasted like and it was dairy free and quite good.

The meat market is well stocked with just about any kind of meat you may be hungering for and the section has been enlarged to accommodate a much wider selection of meats.

If you’re a fish lover you won’t be disappointed in the variety of fish offered in the stores.

Grouchy usually dines in the city’s restaurants for this column, but Grouchy always did love a good deli meal and Family Fare offers one of the best.

So if you are shopping for groceries and want to take a break for a nice lunch, try out the Family Fare Shopping Centers. There is so much to see that you will end up staying much longer than you intended.
