They don’t call it Fuddruckers for nothing!

Grouchy decided to get out and about on Saturday, so with grandkids in tow we stopped in at Storybook Island located on the west side of Rapid.

For those of you who don’t know what Storybook Island is, it is one of the oldest parks in Rapid City. It is a kids (of all ages) park with some of the most iconic storybook charters, like Humpty Dumpty, the Three Little Pigs, and the Wizard of Oz, to mention a few. Storybook Island is open to the public and is a free park. (They do ask for donations just to help with the up keep of the park.) So make sure you stop by.

After a morning of walking through the park, Grouchy decided to take a trip up to the Rushmore Mall to do a little shopping. Once all the money was spent and a lot of walking, Grouchy and the grandkids were hungry. With the food court in the mall we did not have to go far for something to eat. There are two Chinese eateries; a Subway, Taco John’s, DQ, a pizza place, and let’s not forget the pretzel place. But Grouchy wanted something more than fast food.

Then we spotted Fuddruckers right beside Grouchy’s favorite coffee house, Starbucks. It was around 2 p.m. and Fuddruckers was still busy, the line to order went quickly. The cashier was friendly and very helpful. They have a wide range of burgers to choose from as well as salads, and Fudds Exotic Burgers, Buffalo, Elk and Wild Boar (Exotic burgers are not at all locations) and for the non-meat eaters, they have Veggie Burgers and several things on the kids menu.

Grouchy settled on the Southwest Burger: You can choose from a 1/3, 1/2, or 2/3 lb. patties. After looking at the 2/3 pound patty, Grouchy know there was no way anyone was going to finish that one, so Grouchy went with the 1/3 pound. Fuddruckers is one of the only restaurants that still cooks your hamburger to your desired doneness. The Southwest Burger Combo came mid-rare with the fries and onion ring combo.

Grouchy ordered the hot dog meal for the kids, and they had a choice of fries or apple wedges and a drink. Total with tax came to $18. 62. They have a lot of seating, and every inch of the place is covered in old photos from James Dean, Elvis Presley, and Marilyn Monroe to the Beatles. A walk down memory lane for old movie buffs. They have a small arcade in the back for the kids.

After receiving our meals, we went to the market fresh produce bar which was loaded with fresh toppings. Grouchy’s Southwest Burger had smokehouse bacon, pepper jack cheese and a scoop of guacamole on a fresh baked homemade bun. The hot dog was grilled the old-fashioned way and placed inside a fresh grilled homemade bun. The burger was juicy and cooked just the way Grouchy ordered it. If Grouchy had one thing to complain about it was the fries, they were a bit underdone for Grouchy – they were the thick cut, lightly breaded seasoned fries that were good, but not quite cooked enough and needed to be a bit crispier. The onion rings, on the other hand, were amazing – thick cut sweet onions with just the right amount of breading fried up crisp. The kids enjoyed the hot dog and fries. Fuddruckers bakes its own bread then slices and grills them to make their own hotdog buns.

So all in all, the food was great, the place was clean and had a very nice atmosphere. Fuddruckers also offers bakery treats and old-fashioned shakes, as well as a nice selection of beers. Grouchy will definitely be stopping by again. (Maybe to try the wild boar burger) and Grouchy thinks the homemade buns and bread are the best in town.

Stay tuned next week and see where Grouchy turns up, Grouchy is kind of like Waldo, you never know where Grouchy will turn up next. Maybe at a table near you.
