Time to Hit the Pow Wow circuit

Little Notes

It seems that changing the clocks on Daylight Savings day throw some people completely off of their routine. Case in point: On Sunday morning Jackie Giago started her day as usual. She got two cups of coffee ready for herself and Tim. But she did it in reverse. She always got two cups and put them in the microwave to heat them and then she would pour in the coffee. On Sunday she poured in the coffee and then put them in the microwave. A couple of minutes later she said, “Tim, did you only make a half pot of coffee this morning?” He replied, “Why would I do that?” He saw the two cups in the microwave and checked them and they were full of coffee hence the half pot still on the burner. Oooops!

The time change also threw Ernestine Chasing Hawk off as she said she is actually still asleep. When she woke up this morning it was already 7:30. Her favorite time of the day is bedtime and least favorite time is when she has to get up.

We are running our “Hitting the Pow wow Circuit” special this week as we look forward to the Wacipi season. When Tim Giago published Lakota Times back in the early 1980’s, his was the first paper to publish a full list of the pow wow’s across the nation. Understanding the Lakota culture and traditions, Tim knew this would be a valuable tool for those who travel around the country enjoying the Ominiciye, gatherings of friends and family. Many tribal members who left home during the “relocation era” only come home once a year, during the local pow wow to visit and reconnect with their families. We are looking forward to the joint gathering of the North and South Dakota Better Newspaper Convention at the end of April in Aberdeen. We have to take pictures of our many winners and send them in this week. The association uses this time to have fun taking photos of award winners to share when they receive their prize. It is always an honor to win at the convention as your work is judged by your peers.

Tim always takes his staff to the convention as it is one of the perks of belonging to the South Dakota Newspaper Association. Staff members always look forward to the event and see it as one of the highlights of the year. The last couple of years our sales manager Kirk Dickerson and our editor Ernestine have also enjoyed finding the local Karaoke bar and entertaining themselves. I think they’ve already located their Karaoke venue in Aberdeen.
