UTTC Graduation set for May 12

BISMARCK, N.D. –– The 2017 Spring Commencement Ceremony for United Tribes Technical College is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, May 12 at the college in Bismarck. The public is invited to attend in the James Henry Community Gymnasium on the campus at 3315 University Drive.

Commencement speaker is David Yarlott Jr., president of Little Big Horn College (LBHC), Crow Agency, MT. He is chairman of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC), an association of the nation’s 37 member tribal colleges.

Dr. Yarlott is a product of the tribal college movement having graduated from LBHC. He has served as LBHC president since 2002, providing administrative leadership for higher education and vocational training services provided to the Crow Tribal Nation.

Yarlott is a strong believer in the positive benefit of team sports. He’s a founding member of the AIHEC Athletic Commission and has worked to expand the role of sports at tribal colleges. His dedication to inter-tribal sports led him to an advisory role in the World Indigenous Games in 2015 in Brazil, and the first-ever participation in that event by tribal college students.

UTTC Spring Commencement concludes the 2016-17 academic year. A traditional meal will follow.

In addition to family members and friends, the event will be attended by tribal leaders from the college’s governing board, representing the tribes of North Dakota: Three Affiliated Tribes of the Mandan/Hidatsa/ Arikara Nation, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, Spirit Lake Tribe, Standing Rock Tribe, and Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians.

Student awards will be presented during an event scheduled for Friday, May 5 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Bismarck Elks Lodge, 900 South Washington Street. Student and athletic awards will be presented, along with faculty and staff awards and student academic honors.
