PATATO CREEK – Valerie Mae Shots, 63, journeyed to the Spirit World on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Valerie Mae Shots was born on June 30, 1955 in Pine Ridge, to Arnold Bearnose and Louise (Richard) Black Cat and was raised by Joe Black Cat and Louise Black Cat.
Valerie is survived by her daughter, Sandra Shot With Arrow; sisters, Shirley May, Keneona Black Cat, and Faith Richards; special friend, Gary Ferguson; aunt, Bertha Conroy; and grandchildren, Baby G, Sonti, Haepi, Tate, Katherine, Johnnie, Dustin, and Darcella.
Valerie was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Alex & Lillian Richard; parents, Louise Black Cat and Joe Black Cat; children, Rhonda Shots and Ron Shots, Jr.; husband, Ronald Shots, brother Les Bearnose; aunt, Shirley Little Eagle; uncles, Louie Richard, Gary Richard, Reno Richard, Sr., Alfred Richard, Reuben Fire Thunder, and Dan Nelson.
Pallbearers were John May, Albert Curry, Sr., Brent Plenty Bull, Will Eagle Heart, Tony Herman, Bo James Black Cat, Gary Ferguson, Jr. and Gary “Baby G” Drapeaux, Jr.

A one night wake service started on Friday, March 22, 2019 at the Little Wound School Gymnasium in Kyle. Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 22, 2019 at the Little Wound School Gymnasium, with Father Ron Seminara, S.J. officiating. Traditional Lakota services were held with Mr. Richard Moves Camp. Burial services were at the St. Timothy’s Episcopal Cemetery in Potato Creek.
