West River schools shine at state cross country meet

HURON—Despite being only one of two teams to have three top ten finishers, the Red Cloud Girls cross country team placed fourth at the Class A Cross Country State Championship in Huron last Saturday.

Sioux Falls Christian easily won the team championship with 30 points. Their top finisher was freshman Natalie Smith who placed second in a time of 18:44.53 for the five-kilometer course. Chamberlain placed second as a team, with 82 points, although they did not have a runner in the top five finishers. Custer was third as a team, with 84 points, and their top finisher was senior Ramsey Karim, who placed fourth. Vermillion was fifth as a team, tying Red Cloud for fourth with 97 points but dropping to fifth because the Crusaders beat them by .41 seconds in combined time.

Red Cloud scored 97 points. Their top finisher was standout senior Jade Ecoffey, a multiple champion in distance races, in a time of 18:58.04. Eighth Grader Rarity Connoyer placed tenth, in a time of 19:31.67. Freshman Ashlan Blount was 12th, in a time of 19:37.02. Junior Esperanza Rama placed 110th in a time of 23:35.70 and senior Monica Giago placed 117th with a time of 25:37.12

The individual champion was Sioux Valley sophomore Isabelle Bloker, who ran a time of 18:32,67. The last of the top five finishers was junior Heidi Olson of Mobridge-Pollock who ran a time of 19:18.00.

In the Boys Class A meet, two Black Hills teams finished one and two. Belle Fourche brought home the team title with 38 points. Hill City rook second with 46 points. Sioux Falls Christian was third with 59 points. Custer was fourth with 86 points, and Dakota Valley was fifth with 111 points.

The top individual finisher was senior Sawyer Clarkson of Belle Fourche, in a time of 15:30.28. Junior Lane Krautschun od Belle Fourche finished second, in 16:06.34. Junior Luke Rupert of Hill City was third, in 16:29.24. Isaac Davelaar, a senior from Sioux Falls Christian was fourth, in 16:36.95, and senior Gage Grohs of Custer took fifth, in 16:40.18.

Rapid City Stevens Girls took home the state tile in the Class AA meet. They scored 97 points. Brandon Valley was second with 100; Sioux Falls Lincoln, 115; Sioux Falls O’Gorman, 125, and Rapid City Central was fifth, with 127 points.

Top individual finisher was senior Ali Bainbridge of SF Lincoln, in 17:26.09; sophomore Libby Castelli, SF O’Gorman, 17:50.80; senior Brionna Holso, RC Stevens, 17:58.20; Eighth Grader Peyton VanDeest, Spearfish, 18:18.09; and freshman Addison Scholten, Brandon Valley, 18:25.52.

Rapid City Stevens also won the Boys Class AA title with 122 points: Yankton, 142; SF Lincoln, 146; Sturgis, 151; and Rapid City Central, fifth, with 181 points.

Induvial champion was the incomparable RC Stevens senior, Simeon Birnbaum, running a time of 15:16.19. Harrisburg senior Cashton Johnson was second, 16:10.48; Pierre senior Jared Lutmer, third, 16:17.81; Yankton senior Zach Fedde, fourth, 16:25.36; and Grady Loos, a RC Stevens junior, fifth, in 16:28.61.

In the Girls Class B meet, Potter County dominated, taking home the team tile with just 24 points. Arlington was second, 60; Gayville-Volin, third, 64; James Valley Christian, fourth, 69; and Northwestern, fifth, 72 points.

Class B Girls individual champion was Emery Larson, a Chester Area freshman, in a time of 18:15.24. Second, freshman Ella Boekelheide, Northwestern, 19:19.24; third, freshman Kaelyn Ulschmid, Arlington, 19:32,26; fourth, freshman Autumn Falls, Highmore-Harold, 19:35.43; and fifth, freshman Danika Kaup, Potter County, 20:01.67.

Philip brought the Class B Boys title home to West River, scoring 20 points. Northwestern was second, 38; Freeman Academy/Marion, third, 53; Ipswich, fourth, 55, and Arlington fifth, with 61 points.

The individual champion was senior Josiah Schroeder of Canistota, with a time of 16:38.25. Junior Tavian Schroeder of Freeman Academy placed second, 17:06,47; junior Nicholas Schlachter, Potter County, third, 17.11.70; junior Lincoln Woodring, Northwestern, fourth, 17:15.88; and junior Wakely Burns, Philip, fifth, in a time of 17:36.77.
