PINE RIDGE – William Joseph Giago (Wakinyan wamni omni) made his journey to the Spirit World surrounded by his loving family at the age of 87. William was born to Joseph Giago and Clara Irving Giago the eldest of 11 children on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota as a proud member of the Oglala Lakota Tribe.
William met and married his wife Alicia Bailey Giago and they were together until her passing in 2010. Together they had 5 children. Christina (Carl) Scherkenbach, Madonna (Edward) Licht, David Joseph Giago, Annemarie (Michael) Tucker, and Ramona (Kelly) Goodsell. Grandchildren Carrie (Zack Barbee) Mckinney, John McKinney Jr., Aaron (Karla) McMorran, Logan Tucker, Tristan Tucker and Nicholas Goodsell. Great grandchildren Aaron Mcmorran II and Lyla Barbee.
Williams post high school education took him to Haskell Indian Nations University, and the
University of South Dakota. He obtained his Master’s Degree in Social Work from Arizona State
University and worked as a clinical social worker for various indigenous tribes until his retirement with Alicia in Lake Havasu City AZ.
Williams’s education and work took his family from Pine Ridge S. Dakota to Vermillion, S. Dakota, Phoenix AZ, Brigham City UT, Tempe AZ and Lake Havasu City AZ.
His final home was with Christina and Carl in Las Vegas NV where they so very patiently cared for him until the time of his passing due to age.
William was preceded in death by his wife Alicia, his parents, Sister Joann (Robert) Sakiestewa and brother Michael (Donna Shangreau) Giago. He is survived by Robert (Judy deceased) Giago, Yvonne (Floyd deceased) Reynolds, Theresa (John) Tibbits, Mary (David deceased) Nephew, Patrick (Lucy) Giago, Loretta (Dwayne) Pourier, Warren (Penny) Giago, and Eugene (Cindy) Giago.
The family plans to return William to his homeland of Pine Ridge to be buried near his parents. The family would like to thank Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas, NV for allowing their father to pass proudly and with dignity and for their support of those left behind.
A wake will be held on Saturday July 9, 2022 beginning at 2:00pm at the Red Cloud Indian School 100 Mission Drive, Pine Ridge, South Dakota 57770 in the new (large) gymnasium. Burial will be on Sunday July 10, 2022 tentatively at 11:00am in the Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery at the same address.
